For many shorter, moderate workouts in comfortable conditions, water and normal meals may be sufficient.

All three can make sense depending on the session.

Electrolytes may be more useful before long, hot or sweat-heavy workouts, especially when your normal food and fluid routine has been disrupted.

After substantial sweating, continue replacing fluids and electrolytes while remembering that meals and snacks also contribute to recovery.

03 - BEFORE A WORKOUT

The goal is to start in a reasonable hydration state.

If you have been drinking normally, eating regular meals, and are preparing for a shorter workout in comfortable conditions, plain water may be enough.

Important: The goal is not to “load up” on as much fluid or sodium as possible. NATA notes that recreational athletes who are already adequately hydrated generally do not need intentional extra pre-exercise fluid loading.[1]

04 - DURING A WORKOUT

Duration + sweat + environment matter more than the clock alone.

Shorter / moderate session

For many healthy people, water may be sufficient when the workout is relatively short, the environment is comfortable and sweating is not substantial.

Longer / hotter / sweatier session

Extended runs, bike rides, hikes, outdoor practices or endurance events create more opportunity for fluid and electrolyte losses. An electrolyte beverage may offer a convenient way to consume fluid and minerals together.

Avoid the opposite mistake

More fluid is not always better.

A sound hydration strategy aims to avoid both excessive dehydration and excessive fluid intake during prolonged exercise.[1]

05 - WHAT ABOUT A 30–60 MINUTE WORKOUT?

You do not automatically need electrolytes because you exercised.

A 45-minute easy indoor workout and a 45-minute high-intensity outdoor session in hot, humid weather can create very different sweat losses.

06 - AFTER A WORKOUT

Recovery is about replacing losses not relying on one beverage.

Your post-workout meal can contribute to rehydration.

08 - SODIUM, CARBOHYDRATES & CONTEXT

Electrolyte replacement and workout fueling are related but not identical.

Sodium after heavy sweating

Sodium is one of the main electrolytes lost through sweat. Replacement needs vary with total sweat loss, sweat sodium concentration, diet and what you eat after training.

Carbohydrates during endurance work

A sugar-free electrolyte drink provides fluid and minerals without being a significant carbohydrate source. During prolonged endurance exercise, carbohydrate may serve an additional fueling role.[3]

Heat changes the hydration equation.

As environmental temperature rises, sweating may increase as your body works to regulate temperature. Electrolytes may become more relevant when sweating increases but an electrolyte drink does not protect you from heat illness.
